It’s shocking how much more relevant Scream 4’s social commentary is now compared to when it came out. We see how internet fame is replacing genuine connection for some, and the desire to obtain it can lead to very dark places. We see how one person can want nothing more than to move on from their trauma, and another can covet the trauma they never had. Trauma can be a quick path to internet fame, and we see how someone can try to fabricate it in order to weaponize it. This is behavior that is unfortunately part of our current culture, and we see the dark places it can take people.
There’s some plot holes, especially at the end, but they don’t take away from my enjoyment. The returning cast is great as always, but the scene stealer was Hayden Panettiere. I do think the actor who played Ghostface was pretty bad and unconvincing, which prevented me from taking them seriously. Still, this had all of the fun I expect from a Scream film, and a great final installment from Wes Craven.
