Robert Shupe’s review published on Letterboxd:
Lists are fun things to look at and then challenge oneself to try something new. Business Insider ranked this in their 100 Best Horror movies of all time. Having never heard of this one I gave it a whirl. Decent but not top 100 material in my view.
The film was the second feature film from feminist filmmaker Anna Billar. I have to say this about Ms. Billar, she is a work horse. She wrote, directed, edited, and produced this movie. She also did the score, the production design, and costumes for the film. Wow, talk about everything being on your shoulders.
The Love Witch is about a female witch in a cult who uses potions to get men to fall in love with her. The production design, look, and details in this movie are phenomenal. Her color palette is very impressive too and was effective. The story and horror to me were severely lacking. The feminist agenda of the movie was mixed as the viewer can discern important messages while at the same time roll their eyes.
The acting seemed in many ways one dimensional but that may have been by design. There was a character that owned a herbal store and the actress seriously looked like she was reading a cue card in front of her. Their was a fight between two women in the film that had enormous potential and it was far too quick robbing the film of real tension. Also, by the time a horror element entered I was ready for it to take off and it didn't.
It should also be mentioned that this is a borderline soft core porn film. Full frontal nudity of both men and women is in the film.
We need more female film makers like Anna Billar. She made the film she wanted to make and it just fell short to me. I do want to watch her earlier film and I wish her tremendous success.
Seriously again the production design was about is good as it gets. I just was not able to love The Love Witch.
Peace.
