Utterly heartbreaking; an emotional rollercoaster that manages to tell a fantastical story whilst also harshly illustrating how imperfect and unfair life can often be. The chemistry between Gosling and Stone is impeccable which makes watching their spontaneous yet precarious relationship fall through, all the more gut-wrenching. The ending felt like a sucker punch straight to the nose: I felt sore, bruised and my eyes started watering uncontrollably. The message of this film was so carefully interwoven into the plot and script and yet it wasn’t until the ending that it finally dawned on me. Damien Chazelle is a luminary. This took me far too long to revisit.
