La La Land

La La Land

Hollywood loves movies about itself - movies that celebrate its history and its place in society, a destination for those who give everything up just for the chance to achieve their dreams. It is for this reason and this reason alone that I refuse to give La La Land five stars. Hollywood doesn't need a bigger head than it already has.

Otherwise, this movie is absolutely brilliant and an ode to Hollywood's past musicals. The opening number sets the stage for the rest of the movie, letting me know that I can expect well-choreographed dancing and beautifully composed musical numbers throughout the rest of the film. Furthermore, each music number added weight and depth to the characters and the narrative on-screen, simultaneously moving the plot forward while also developing our protagonists in very real and emotional ways.

Speaking of the characters, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are spectacular as Mia and Sebastian respectively. Their chemistry on-screen is unrivaled and their work, from the extensive training on the dancing/singing/playing the piano to the bringing to life these two characters in a way that the audience can relate to on an emotional level, is Oscar-worthy (and, quite possibly, career-defining). I think Chazelle makes a wise choice in limiting side characters. You didn't need them for this story to be told, no subplots to distract us from the story unfolding between Mia and Sebastian (although shoutout to John Legend's Keith for his role and that amazing song he sings).

This movie speaks to never giving up on your dreams, to chase them with fire and passion in your soul, and when you achieve them, to give back to those who are still chasing theirs. It is a beautiful picture of perseverance and determination, even in the face of disappointment and hardship. I thought the movie did a great job of grounding dream-chasing in realistic circumstances, not skating by the suffering and the sacrifice that comes with pursuing your dreams but celebrating them for their role in helping you achieve them.

Damien Chazelle has become a must-watch director for me following this movie (not to mention Whiplash which was phenomenal). I thought his choices throughout the movie, such as where to capture a scene all in one take, were excellent. Also evident in this movie is Chazelle's love (obsession?) with jazz.

Definitely one of my favorites of the year.
