While the narrative gets wobbly as the runtime progresses, this movie makes up for it with its heart. Sure, there are nitpicks I could make about some seemingly out-of-thin-air character introductions. I didn’t notice these characters before they popped up on screen in the 2nd act and they ended up being the thing that made the rest of the movie possible. Just felt weird pacing-wise.
Also, the animation is STELLAR. It pulls some style from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and TMNT: Mutant Mayhem in that many sequences feel like they were beautifully hand drawn with a paintbrush. One small scene that might be in the trailer looks like that Japanese painting “The Great Wave of Kanagawa” and there’s a magnificently colored forest fire scene that is so unique and original. All in all, a beautiful movie with a story that could have been better.
