I remember watching the Oscars in 2016 and seeing all those Australian punks accept their technical awards and regretting that I'd missed Fury Road in theatres. I held out hope that I'd catch a theatrical screening eventually, and one of our rep theatres finally delivered last night. I'm glad I went in unspoiled, ready to take in this film and its black-and-chrome glory.
This is a great example of reboot that keeps what's great about the original series (the visceral action, the unearthly atmosphere), drops what doesn't work as well (on-screen depictions of sexualized violence...), and builds a modern movie that feels vivid and groundbreaking in its own right.
Both Hardy and Theron do great work in this. I could easily imagine these same characters with the same motivations and struggles being excessively maudlin if not played right, but they both knock it out of the park.
Can we all agree to go back to a world of 2-hour action movies? The beauty of Fury Road is that economizing is at its core: our heroes have a finite number of bullets and only so much fuel. Constraints create stakes, a lesson other filmmakers and producers in this genre should brush up on.
Can't wait to see the colour cut someday, hopefully back on the big screen. A perfect culmination to my weekend Max-athon.
