The power we hold as creators should not be underestimated. Ethan Hawke once spoke of how art can seem like a distant thing, until you go through some life-changing event, whether it be euphoric or traumatic; and it is in those moments where art becomes actual sustenance. These are words that I know I will carry with me forever. Not since Cinema Paradiso has a film so directly reminded me why I love what I do. The cast is excellent, notably a radiant-as-always Michelle Williams, and a startling bright newcomer in Gabriel LaBelle. It’s intensely humorous, and yet deeply emotional, and only works more when you sit and think about the journey a distraught but immensely gifted boy turned legendary filmmaker took to get to this place of beauteous closure and charming reconciliation and hindsight. I will always love Steven Spielberg for continuing to remind me more than anyone that what I love has meaning.
