A sharp script, capable leads, and engrossing story make The Nice Guys one of the better buddy action/comedies I've seen made in recent times. True, I've missed out on quite a few acclaimed ones lately but The Nice Guys is just so effortlessly irreverent and entertaining that I'd say it'd be hard to top it. Shane Black totally nails the Neo-noir vibe mixed with modern day action beats. The recreation of '70's LA sometimes feels overdone (I wasn't alive then and can't say how accurate the movie is) but it sure looks and feels like the '70's. At times the film even felt like a '90's buddy movie, both in tone and plotting and in today's ultra serious climate the film was a refreshing and genuinely funny excursion into nostalgic throwbacks. Russell Crowe is capably cast and performs admirably while Ryan Gosling is actually pretty hilarious. But for me, it was Angourie Rice who pretty much stole the show as the precocious and crafty child of Gosling's Holland March. I'd definitely go see a sequel to this (written and directed again by Shane Black, or course).
