I loved its focus on the conflict in loneliness and security in how that pertained to character growth. They constantly talk about, and I think it’s the entire purpose of Bibi Andersson’s scene, this idea that everyone is inherently lonely and it’s a flaw in the nature of relationships that even at their best they can’t cure that sickness. I think Johan mostly reflects that idea and it’s the basis of most of his decision making and resentment to Marianne. She challenges this though bc once she breaks her shell she has this total overhaul of personality as we see her, probably reflective of feminist changes, move towards almost complete independence and security, she takes control of the relationship This makes their conflict a whole lot more interesting bc it positions her on a platform above Johan and she’s wrestling with whether she wants him or not but she’s the one with the agency, which is rly the core point. She develops agency, she chooses to change how she lives every aspect of her life now and is no longer boxed in by expectations of the modern woman. Then in the end we see agency conflict with loneliness which is particularly positioned in the last scene where she has her nightmare that we’re all slowly falling down a hill, and we get Johan shining for once when she questions the legitimacy of her entire character arc, did she ever really love or be loved, and he says yes. But it’s bc of her establishment of agency she’s able to feel both loneliness and love, it’s a trade off but it’s in her control, and at least to me that’s a positive change from the faked escape from loneliness that is inauthentic living
