They indeed are a wild bunch. A bunch of the worst and most rude, rotten, violent and cold-hearted that a man can be. But at the same time, they are so humanly real and psychologically complex, and with a ray of purity shining in their eyes, where it is almost impossible for us the audience not to identify and root for them in their existentialist journey covered by the brutal violence that covers the vast world In which they live, in search of a kind of redemption that seems impossible.
With the direction of Sam Peckinpah at its cinematic dawn, building his Western where violence and brutality become alive and turns into a living spectrum that surrounds the environment of its characters, and the poetic and contemplative tone of his direction comes In an instantenous and so natural way, that ties perfectly with its sharp narrative in its humor and strong dramatic condensation. And it still delivers perhaps the best and most violent shootouts and action scenes that the genre (if not, the entire cinema itself) ever had.
Along with its cast that exudes perfection with a true cinematic performance mastery coming from each one, where years of story and whirlwinds of feelings comes with little exchange of looks and gestures. And now, for the lack of a better word, what we witness here in the end is a masterpiece that exalts the best that there is in Western genre and in cinema itself. It challenges and provokes its audience with its incessant brutality and ironic and acid tone, but engages us with a huge heart embedded in the emotional of its unforgettable characters, which results in every second of this film being trully unforgettable.
