“I feel like something's gonna happen. And if I scratch the surface, there’ll be something terrible underneath.”

Works better a second time around when you realize its “flaws” are part of its design: the Beverly Hills 90210-style Malibu teen melodrama comes by necessity simply so Yuzna can tear it all down and reveal the ugly, exploitative class tensions beneath the sunny California exterior. Unquestionably a masterpiece, and a deeply radical one at that.
