“I’m always tired.”
The last goodnight. Yearning for comfort, not for the long haul, but for confirmation that humanity is something worth leaving behind. Whoever first said it’s the coward’s way out has obviously never tried it; I can’t think of a harder thing to do. We all want to be something, or better yet, for each and every one of our lives to mean something; it does not matter how sincerely people may try to show us or tell us they do—gestures of the former, while meaningful, are ultimately irrelevant, and any and all articulations of the latter reek of either pity or sympathy by default—when you look at yourself and all you see are weary eyes, a worn-out body, dreams long since lost or abandoned, it is very hard to find any objective value.
We are all caught up in this limbo of blind faith or bereft acceptance. Peace, no matter from where or how fleeting, might be our last and only refuge, and some of us may not find it. So often we wish we could’ve done more for those who didn’t; that we could’ve waved a magic wand and taken it all away, appealing with logic or emotion or a mix of both to convince them to remain; that now, when all is said and done, we desire from them a small handful of words amounting to a reason or some kind of explanation, or just one last statement to cling to—an indelible reminder that they existed. But the truth is, they owe us nothing. We simply have to try to go on living with that which they could not.
Not all stories get a happy ending.
