I love how Das leaves you to marinate on her messages. She traces things simply and subtly, rather than wave them in your face.
The most riveting element of this film, to me, was the sound! Maybe because there was little to no non-diegetic sound. I loved how different tones and moods of the story can be readily attached to auditory elements: the thick hum of crickets, the rustling of leaves, wading through water to catch fish, a growing chorus of voices, and of course, the resounding wails of a mourning mother.
Bulbul Can Sing frightened me more than I was prepared for. I had to remind myself the most difficult scenes were not real, but that’s a testament to phenomenal acting. Too a grave reminder that Das is harnessing stories of suffering, loss, and social upheaval that are a present reality for many.
Bulbul’s songs and sounds will stay with me for a while. Love with your heart!
