I'm finally gonna watch the new one tomorrow!! Of course I'mma watch this one tonight in preparation. The last time I saw saw Spiderman was in No Way Home. Or maybe I rewatched Andrew's films some time last year. It's been a while either way. This revisit was special in some way.
I loved Into the Spider-verse the very first time I watched it and it's still in my opinion the best Spidey movie (I'm guessing that's about to change tomorrow) but every time I watch it, I come closer to the character. Trust me when I say I used to think that'd never happen. Peter Parker's me in a lot of ways and I'm aware almost the whole world feels so, which is why he's unanimously the most popular superhero of all time. Even when I was half as old as Miles Morales is in this film, I felt connected to mah man Peter because he told me I'm not alone. I mean, yeah, I'd have to be bitten by a radioactive spider and lose a loved one to really become him, but I recognize the mischievous, clumsy, nerdy, and always-getting-back-up good Samaritan.
The guilt of apathy and the drive to prevent more loss makes Spidey incredibly personable! Miles' arc here beautifully reflects the depth of what's probably the most famous line of all comic books ever - "with great power comes great responsibility". He didn't even have a choice. His hero literally gave him a mission with his last words! Determination and a good heart aren't strong weapons in the game of survival, but for those of us trying to get by without measing up phenomenally on a daily basis, they're the only two tools in our arsenal which keep our self-doubting and self-loathing at bay. They don't work as regular motivational forces because have you seen the World around you? You have to make it stop spinning to stop your head from spinning.
But then you have that one moment, one choice to do it and you take a leap of faith. The world stands still, its noise drowns out and you know you got this. That hug from an invisible brother letting you know life isn't over even if it feels that way and you're on your own, kid, yeah, you can face this - that brother is Spider-man.
