Phoenix Forgotten

I have a strange relationship with found footage films. Sometimes I say I mostly dislike them, but then watch 3/4 in a row and like all of them. Sometimes I dislike the ones people like and like some of the most hated (I really liked Alien Abduction days ago). Here...I can't see anything special?

The film has a long, long set-up. It's interesting at the beginning with a cool montage between present and past events but then we just realise the "phenomenon" will basically be about the last 10/15 minutes. This happens with a lot of found footage films but don't let anyone tell you all of them are like that, there are a lot of them that do it well - The Medium, for example, has a long set-up but super well executed, with action here and there -...but there are also a lot of them that are...just lazy.

I couldn't stop imagining how this would have worked much better as a short film. Yes, I can understand the importance of a good set-up. No, I don't believe the set-up should be the entirety of two acts, without really setting up anything for a big part of it (we are just there listening and watching random conversations).

Some of these type of ff films - that take a long time to show anything, in fact - can even surpass this problematic when they show you something special at the end. But on this film it was just the basic stuff, no pay-off. Cool concept, very interesting phenomenon, some cool characters but it just doesn't deliver.
