Film Number 24 on PinHeadLarry145's 30 Days 30 Countries Film Challenge!
Egypt, 1969 or 1975?
There are films in this challenge that have provided windows into other cultures and landscapes, but not a lot have made me want to actually visit these places ASAP. I think I finally broke that streak tonight with Al-Mummia.
Al-Mummia, or "The Mummy" hails from Egypt and carries with it the accolade of being one of the greatest Egyptian films ever made. The version I watched looked old as dirt but in fact its only about as old as Jaws. This film is about black markets, mummy burial sites and stolen artifacts. It's a very Egyptian feeling film. A story that only the land could tell. Aside from the story of the stolen artifacts the film also comments on the social structure of Egypt and if you have a basic understanding of Egyptian politics, it becomes a voice for class differences and a humble tale of family above all else.
Al-Mummia is a film of ancient themes in an even more ancient place. The breathtaking beauty of
Egypt is captured in all its old grainy glory. Everything seems to be basked in warm golden rays of the setting sun and the Arabic that rolls off the tongues of the characters adds to the authentic nature of the film and really makes you feel like you are there. It's a winning combination of awe inspiring beauty and rich history. It's easy to get swept up in the atmosphere of Egypt and all the talk of ancient Pharos and treasure sparks an adventurous feeling in my heart. But not in the rip-roaring swashbuckling kind. This film is a much more quiet affair that lets you soak up the culture and bask in the rich history of the land.
The film is still great and some technical issues and plot grievances hold it back a bit but in the grand scheme of things, its a lost jewel of world cinema. I'm glad I got to view it.
If I do end up taking a spontaneous adventure to Egypt, it would go one of two ways: I could live an adventurous life like T.E Lawrence or I could get sick with Malaria or an ancient curse. I'll take the chances.
