Steve’s review published on Letterboxd:
I have so many thoughts, so bear with me as I attempt to articulate them. This is the best movie I’ve seen (so far) in 2023 without question and by a clear margin. It’s dense, it’s complex, it’s packed with incredible performances and moments that will probably stay with me forever.
Just to start off Oppenheimer doesn’t have a bad performance in it. Robert Downey Jr puts on the performance of his career. Hands down. Eat your fucking heart out Stark. Cillian Murphy as per usual is fantastic. He commands the attention in every scenes he’s in and he shows that whatever his acting process may be it WORKS. Emily Blunt has in intensity to her performance that can only be expected of her and the movie would’ve been left sorely lacking had someone else filled her role. The same going for Florence Pugh who gave what I can only call an unnerving and brilliant show. The real Albert Einstein making an appearance was shocking I’m not sure how they convinced him to reanimate. Also Matt Damon was there and I loved it, but I won’t speak to the quality of his performance because I’m generally just obsessed with Matt Damon. I’m sure I’m missing some people…. Jack Quaid was a nice face although I wish I’d seen more of both him and Josh Peck although I’ll say nobody was left out to the point of feeling wasted despite such a large cast.
As for the story it was incredibly dense, but I don’t feel like it was overly packed. I think the movie was miraculously paced as few can do like Nolan does. Despite sitting there for 3 hours I honestly could’ve sat there for longer and I genuinely don’t think the movie would’ve overstayed its welcome. Nolan is a filmmaker who deserves your utmost respect and he yet again shown himself to be in a league almost all of his own with Oppenheimer.
Fantastic movie and you should see it.
