In terms of genre and setting, Romulus mirrors the original more than any film in the franchise. It’s firmly in the horror zone, but it lacks the intellect and the atmosphere of the original. The CGI reprisal of Ian Holm is a mistake, but the addition of a new kind of alien monster at the finale is not—that thing was awesome in the most repulsive way. Álvarez puts his stamp on the Alien brand in a few other ways, including an incredible sequence involving xenomorphic blood floating around in zero gravity. It’s also apparent he wanted to move away from the original’s black and white color palette, opting for a kaleidoscope of orange, blue, black, yellow, metallic gray. Visually, it’s an impressive film, except for that Ian Holm CGI bit. Narratively, it’s predictable, bordering on lazy. Eh, wuddya gonna do?!
