Toys in the Attic utilizes an impressive variety of animation techniques to breathe life into a miniature world of found objects with remarkable creativity and ingenuity—a testament to the rich history of Czechoslovakian stop-motion animation and its evolution into the 21st century. The central collection of characters is impressively crafted and charmingly puppeteered, while also possessing the proper amount of creepiness inherent in the form to service the darker sides of this story. While the premise isn’t the most narratively original—the comparisons to Toy Story are unavoidable—the film compensates with its exceptionally tactile physical world and frequent visual trickery, turning each sequence into an enchanting display of animated wizardry.
