Jiří Barta’s The Pied Piper is a meticulously crafted stop-motion masterpiece set in a distorted underworld of carved wood, etched metal, clockwork machinery, and ambiguously alive rats. Barta's disorienting use of depth and perspective, combined with the battered, gothic German expressionistic architecture of the production design, creates a nightmarish diorama where three distinct social classes struggle for survival. This grotesque portrayal of wealth, greed, and revenge may feature a narrative that is fairly straightforward—true to the allegorical roots of the original fable—but the film offers a feast of moral complexity and visual richness.
