I wasn’t expecting the Rachel Weisz screwball comedy to be the most consistently entertaining aspect of The Mummy, but she undoubtedly brings us closest to the desired spirit and aesthetic of classic adventure films. Despite some flaws in how the romance is introduced and fairly unfunny supporting characters, the film mostly redeems itself through the chemistry of the central relationship. The scope of the production design, practical effects, and stunt work are also highly effective. While the early CGI visual effects can be inconsistent, they mostly hold up.
Ultimately, The Mummy leans further into its silliness than I would have hoped and the curse element isn’t narratively cohesive enough to fully work, but it remains a fun artifact from a near-lost era.
