I think it’s fair to say that I’m left pondering the ideas expressed in The Double Life of Véronique more than I am the experience of watching the film itself. I liked certain aspects such as the connection existing through an art (music) and the ultimate fear and sadness of disillusionment through an awareness of narratives forms, such as puppetry and stories. Yet, I felt like I was mostly left out of those ideas until the end.
I really admire some of the visual poetry found in the performance sequences like the concert and puppet show, though I’m never in love with this particular color grade anytime I see something similar. There are some nice moments of perspective point-of-view and reflections used to visually reinforce the symbolism at play.
I could see myself wanting to revisit this to try to get more out of it from the beginning, but I can’t quite see my feelings changing. As emotionally engaging as it is, I do prefer a little more narrative explicitness in knowing what I’m meant to be looking for. Still, maybe if I know this from the onset I won’t spend so much effort looking.
