Now and Then is a sweet coming-of-age story that managed to make me tear up a few times. It’s a shame this isn’t more popular. It’s a bit slight, but I think it’s just as enjoyable as the many similar male-led films in this genre.
It does try to tackle too many ideas — the present day frame plays a bit heavy-handed and unnecessary, and I didn’t care for a side plot that felt like it was trying too hard to do Stephen King. Otherwise, the young ensemble is strong, the soundtrack is great, and the film really captures a sense of summer friendships. It definitely sparked some memories.
