With Killers of the Flower Moon, defender of cinema Martin Scorsese constructs another epic of American historical drama that deals with the complexities of trust, betrayal, and closely-held secrets. The level of attention and care toward period and cultural authenticity is palpable across the production and costume design, and the screenplay even makes a few contextual choices that firmly place the film within a necessary contemporary perspective. It seems obvious to center the narrative on Lily Gladstone's Mollie Burkhart, and while that might have been the stronger perspective through which to experience this story, it's Scorsese's distinct proclivity as an artist to expose the eternal evils of mankind that is his rightful way into this history. It feels slightly too drawn out and procedural, but what a gift it is to learn more about the Osage Nation and have to sit with the way white Americans have continued to steal from Indigenous peoples under the guise of community.
