For my first Hooptober watch, I decided to dive right into one of this year's more unique criteria—Indian horror.
Game Over may struggle with tonal consistency, genre focus, and cohesive structure, and it takes its time to fully connect the narrative to its video game design setup. However, the various genre elements still work well as standalone sequences. While the third-act gimmick feels familiar, its connection to the protagonist's backstory and weaknesses gives it a fresh and clever spin. The film also includes some inventive POV/VR shots, a smart horror use of a tattoo, and a pulsating electronic score that enhances the thrill every time it kicks in.
Bonus points to my programming instincts, as Game Over includes a few brief found footage moments—one of the major themes in my Hooptober lineup this year.
