Cyrano is satisfying enough if you’re watching for that classic literary adaptation vibe that Joe Wright has been known for, but as a musical it’s unfortunately one of the least inspiring of the year. Being a period romantic drama, it’s nice to look at, but none of its visuals translate well into musical storytelling beyond a few montage sequences here and there and some pretty odd choreography. It’s not an actively bad musical, it’s just so simple and underwhelming, especially considering I had several people recommend me the stage production to me several years ago.
Peter Dinklage does give a very good performance in a character that is beautifully crafted for him, even if he’s about as much of a singer as Russell Crowe in Les Misérables. Still, it’s the spoken prose and the depth of their meaning that ultimately matter the most. Fortunately, the self-proclaimed poetry is all believable; these love letters justifiably given all the power in the word.
