I would imagine Nolan, Murphy and RDJ have already cleared their mantelpieces for the inevitable golden statues that will arrive early 2024. And I would also suggest that Göransson makes sure that he has room too.
The number of lone cinema patrons (in my screening) is testament to the hard sell of, “anyone fancy coming to see a 3 hour drama about the father of the nuclear bomb?”, and it’s inevitable cold silence of a response. However 3 hours zip by as Nolan weaves the story of Oppenheimer’s rise and fall from favour. Taking us through his journey of the bomb being invented, dropped and the inevitable repercussions of such a game changer on the world (both emotional and physical) and its impact on the players.
While RDJ performs his finest work, it feels like Murphy barely moves. He face fills the frame and the smallest of movements invite the audience to journey through his thoughts. No less of a performance and a stark contrast to the size of the impact his ‘invention’ has on the world.
