the first time i watched this movie, i was a sophomore in high school. my dad and i had fought that week and i think he wanted to make it up to me. he didn’t tell me where we were going or what we were doing, just saying we were going “sneakling.”
we pulled up to the worse movie theater in austin, an amc showing all their movies for a discounted price. when the opening scene started, the speakers crackled and shook so hard they almost fell off the wall. i sat staring slack jawed at the screen for two hours and sobbed through the last 20 minutes.
the second time i watched this movie in a theater, i was surrounded by my closest friends and coworkers. they giggled and sniffled through the film, clutching each others hands and passing candy back and forth. i’ve never felt more joy than watching this film again.
every time i rewatch la la land, i think of my dad and how he knew i would love this film. it feels like all of the times my mom and dad would sit me down to watch the classic mgm musicals. today, i miss my parents and i miss my dad who took one look at the trailer for la la land and knew it would bring him and his teenage daughter back together again.
