“Even though it was not as amazing as the first film, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ was a fun rewatch!”
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) is a superhero movie directed by Marc Webb, and features Andrew Garfield in the titular role, Emma Stone, Dane Dehaan, Jamie Foxx, Sally Field, Campbell Scott, Embath Davidtz, Colm Feore, and Paul Giamatti.
Serving as a sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), the film follows our beloved web slinger (Garfield) attempting to protect the city from the devious Oscorp, alongside the ones he truly loves.
The performances from the main cast were incredible and exciting to watch, especially Andrew Garfield, Jamie Foxx, and Emma Stone.
The action sequences were amazing, which was thanks to the outstanding visual effects, incredible performances (as I have mentioned above), and the powerful soundtrack. Each action scene has made me feel excited about what kind of unique acts the characters will do to defend themselves.
Like I have said, Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack was, as usual, spectacular to listen to as it has kept me thrilled during the movie, alongside working with The Magnificent Six. Electro’s theme has to be my favourite song in this film because of how electric and powerful it was, especially since it suits his character.
I also enjoyed the cinematography because of the impressive camera shots and correct colour lighting to suit the overall tone of the film and how it relates to each character.
For example: The blue colour scheme represents Electro’s presence, while the green colour scheme represents The Green Goblin’s.
Additionally, the film still stayed true to Spider-Man’s personality from the comics by making sure he is entertaining me by mocking the antagonists, and how I can sympathise with him.
Another aspect I loved about the movie was that it had some additional emotional moments during Peter’s journey because there were a few scenes that nearly made me cry.
However, after rewatching the film, there were some elements that I thought made this movie to be weaker than its predecessor.
I was not a huge fan of Dane Dehaan’s portrayal of Harry Osborn because he acts like a little kid due to his spoiled nature. However, his performance was still good to watch.
Much like Spider-Man 3 (2007), the film’s story tends to focus on too many characters (especially the three villains, who would steal the spotlight from each other), and subplots that set up future instalments that never saw the light of day, which was because of Sony interfering with Marc Webb’s original vision of the movie.
The Rhino was barely in the movie and he does not wear his mechanised suit until the very end of the movie.
Speaking of the Rhino, both he and The Green Goblin have no resemblance to their comic counterparts. This is because the former looked a rejected Transformers character, while the latter looks little like a goblin compared to the legendary Willem Dafoe.
Overall, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) was an okay sequel, but it would have better if Sony had not ruined it. I hope Andrew Garfield gets his third film!
