The first two thirds are great but as it wraps up there are some big inconsistencies in the quality of the writing. Seems like they aren’t sure if it’s a neo-noir thriller or a horror movie, and there are moments where it succeeds at both, but its strongest when it leans into the police-procedural stuff.
I don’t know if it’s the “scariest movie of the decade” as it was marketed, but every-horror-movie-ever markets itself as that, and then we all bicker over it like the lemmings we are. “Scariness” is subjective and that’s why I mostly dgaf about the modern horror genre. It’s probably super scary if you’re 13 and home alone, but if you are a grown up it’s probably not that scary? But is it reasonable for a grown man to expect to be scared watching a movie? I don’t have the answers.
