There's a lot that the movie is saying overall but I was struck by how beautiful it looked. With the characters it dangerously tread the line between sensibly animated animals and, the more common, anime-eyed disneyfied sacks of saccharine. There still were glimpses of the real-but-funny-but-real Lion King animal kingdom characteristics in the animals. At least that much is partly commendable. On top of that were the absolute moments of beautiful frames lovingly coloured, staged, and placed, where I could see the Miyazaki influence the director talked about. Too bad he couldn't incorporate that into the characters but anyways what even do you expect from a studio that changes their iconic opening title to THAT mawkish dump.
Got teary eyed more than once but perhaps I watched it during an otherwise emotionally vulnerable time. Still the first half (3/4th even) is an incredible feat of emotional storytelling. Loved that much.
