The first hour drags like hell, but the forty minutes that follow are pretty fantastic. Once they hit the afterlife, the film takes off, with musical numbers, Willem Defoe running riot, and gags that actually land.
Odd that in a film scored by Danny Elfman, the only bit of the score I really noticed was Pino Donaggio's theme from Carrie, but in other horror news, Burton uses a flashback to make a mini Bava-style Italian gothic, which was a highlight.
I think it was slightly better than I expected, and something of a return to form for Burton.
