This film is fucking unsettling. It is absolutely horrifying, but not in the way most expected it to be. The way this film was marketed, it made it seem like a more straightforward horror film, filled with jumpscares and body mutilation. However, this film is far more complex with how it scares you, which results in a much more memorable film. The film starts with one of the best cold openings and title cards I’ve ever seen, and then from there, it broodingly lurks closer to you until it reaches a phenomenal climax that ties it all together in a perfect way that made me wanna rewatch it immediately.
Nicolas Cage delivers such a weird performance here. It is hysterically insane for the entirety of this, and I loved every second of it. Whenever he was on screen, I was so intrigued to see what he would say or do next, because it was just that crazy. It made me laugh at times simply because of how insane he was. Nic Cage definitely stole the show as far as acting goes, but that’s not meant to discredit Maika Monroe, because he’s also amazing. You can sense the fear that the has at many points, and she just delivered on all ends. This entire film as a whole completely delivers. One of the most unnerving horror films I’ve seen in a long while, and one of the best films to come out this year thus far.
