Shane Black is well known for his over-the-top action movies, The Nice Guys is no deviation for his tried and true method of filmmaking. The film is filled to the brim with slapstick comedy, dirty humor, and bloody violence which may strike a chord with some moviegoers and might turn others away from this classic buddy cop film. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe have some great chemistry throughout the movie, and are on top of their comedic timing. The screenplay is often hilarious, really nailing the humor in the majority of the scenes. There are plenty of high stakes fights with some really fun and creative backdrops, with the high-octane violence being a staple of Black's movies. It seems like the movie starts to drag in the middle third, seeming a bit repetitive, really milking some of the buddy cop stereotypes. However, the movie culminates in a really exciting final third, bringing all of the multiple, mysterious plotlines to fruition, creating a really satisfying conclusion to the film.
