A skin crawling fusion of mystery and horror.
‘Longlegs’ achieved its goal in making me genuinely unsettled. This was an eerie detective murder mystery that slowly unravels into something more sinister than I expected, I heard the direction it takes is polarising but I personally enjoyed my experience. I thought the narrative was coated with enough mystery to keep me at the edge of my seat, this on edge feeling was greatly elevated by the cinematography. Not only did the movie just look gorgeous but its camerawork was integral to making the audience uncomfortable. I thought Nicolas Cage was really great, his performance was genuinely unnerving, he never failed to make me uneasy. I heard a lot of people online state this film is an example of “style over substance”, I couldn’t disagree more I think this is an example of when style elevates the present substance. This was one of the most unique takes on the “satanic” sub genre of horror I’ve seen.
This was an experience that I can’t say I enjoyed but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t glued to the screen. This film might not be “the scariest movie ever” but it certainly discomposed me more than 99% of films I’ve seen.
