Ollie Cochran’s review published on Letterboxd:
I find it interesting that the seemingly conventional approach to filmmaking from the Safdie Brothers derives from such unconventional sources. With Scorsese and Tarantino being cited as inspirations, it’s easy to see where the kinetic, dynamic filmmaking stems from. Yet, their films still feel so distinct. With Good Time and Uncut Gems, the Safdies cemented themselves as masters of pacing and structuring. Their anxiety-ridden, stress-inducing style of filmmaking is perhaps one of the revolutions of the late 2010s. The editing is picturesque and immaculately builds the tension. By layering scenes expertly, the Safdies have a strong control over the emotional peaks. The pulse-pounding elements are not superfluous; instead, the intimate scenes are allowed to flourish and underscore the rising tension.
Whilst I’ve seen many people praise Uncut Gems for its incredible sound design and score, I think the writing is the major talking point. I simply loved the claustrophobic nature and overlapping of the dialogue. Lakeith Stanfield, in particular, was bloody brilliant at maintaining the high-intensity level of energy and atmosphere. Adam Sandler was fantastic – as he always seems to be when coupled with great directors – and really propelled the film to new heights. Effectively, the Safdies have done the unthinkable: got a fantastic Sandler performance and brought a professional NBA player into a main role, and then get an amazing performance out of him too.
I already can’t wait for their next feature.
