Eastwood’s ability to fracture the story and bring out magnificent performances from his actors is part of Sully’s excellence. Tom Hanks is stellar as Captain Sullenberger and Aaron Eckhart poignantly plays a supporting role. The main airplane crash is at the forefront of the narrative, but by staggering its screen time Eastwood allows for a more devoted and slow approach to the aftermath also. Effectively, Sully is a story of a hero, but perhaps an unconventional one; one who is shying away from the spotlight and is tormented by the alternate possibilities of the central event. Without a doubt one of the finest contemporary portrayals of PTSD, this Eastwood biopic is one of the more forgotten about features of the last decade, but certainly one of the most important.
