Ostensibly, Enemy is a study of the deconstruction of the human psyche. We may never know whether Jake Gyllenhaal plays the different people, identical in appearance, or whether it’s 2 different sides to one singular persona. Even without this knowledge, Villenueve shows his devoted craftsmanship and produces yet another fantastic film. Both this and Prisoners came out in the same year and, I know it’s novel for me to say this, he’s definitely solidifying himself as one of the finest directorial visions to emerge out of the 2010s. This 2013 feature is challenging and bold, offering insightful imagery and excellent storytelling to convey a deeply thought-provoking message. A fine piece of work.
