This review may contain spoilers.
Despite me logging Oppenheimer for the fourth time as a 5 outta 5, I wanted to touch on the few things I thought were slightly imperfect or that needed some growing on me.
-the sex scenes. Nolan has never done this in any of his films, so to see it here was jarring (at least for me). I’d say the second one is more crucial to the story than the first. The first one acts as an idea while not being historically recorded (c’mon, you really think they read Sanskrit text while doing it?)
-fast editing of conversations. This isn’t a flaw, but the first time viewing this it felt like everyone talked at such a rapid pace it felt unnatural at times. After 4 viewings, I’ve been able to keep up with it. If anything, it only makes things more exciting. Maybe that’s the glory in Nolan films though, you just take in more with each viewing.
-Einstein’s sweater. That moment when Albert walks into frame out of no where after a car passes by was kinda funny and the guy sitting next to me in the Chinese Theatre chuckled. Was he living next to Oppenheimer? Why was he there in that moment? Maybe they explained and I missed it?? Besides the fact, Einstein looked incredible in those sweaters and NO ONE is talking about that.
-Montage ending. Again, this isn’t a flaw, I’ve just been able to notice throughout Nolan’s filmography how he likes to end his movies with a monologue being said over a collection of shots which show where characters end up or in this case a significant event in the character’s life. I actually quite like it. I guess the first time I could notice it and it took me outta the moment ever so briefly.
There’s not a lot still that I complain about with this movie. I was motivated to write this because I saw posts poking fun at the men in their 20s who love Nolan. I mean, sure I fill that supposed stereotype but this movie didn’t make nearly a billion dollars for nothing. It’s a masterclass in the art of filmmaking and storytelling. I also can’t leave this review without mentioning how flawless Ludwig’s score is. It shifts from wonder to tension to horror and it blows my mind.
