A film that's beyond a rating system. I watched this because I read an article on Breillat, and learned that she was quite the dirtbag. Nice to know that there are sexually perverse female directors along with the men, that's an equality of sorts.
This film is disturbing in a way that is hard to articulate. The article I read quoted Breillat as saying that men give women shame, and I feel that this is true. I never felt shame over my body or it's impulses until men started looking at me/telling me how to look. Why is it so perverted to see a girl peeing? It's completely natural, but when the lens is close up on her vagina, it feels crass and unwatchable. What are we meant to see of others? A vagina is an organ like anything else, but we've made it erotic.
Of course, this film is very erotic. We delve deep into her sexual fantasies, some unwatchable (the vagina worm part made me gag). Psycho-sexual father daughter fantasies, sexual harassment, cum everywhere--its not a film to be watched innocently. So what is it then?
I grew up in a very repressed household and I carried sexual shame with me to college. Young women have sexual fantasies just like men. I like to say that I think about sex 90% of the time, saving the world 10%. So why does it feel so perverse to watch a young woman think and engage in sexual acts? Is it shame or something sinister?
