In my time of absence on Letterboxd, I did manage to watch a couple Pixar movies here and there. With Inside Out 2 coming out, I thought I'd rewatch all of the previous Pixar films. Some of them are super fresh on my memory, some aren't. I will finally be able to make an actually good and honest ranking of this studio too; I'm excited!!
Coming off of Toy Story, a critically and casually acclaimed film that many people to this day still find to be an absolute masterpiece, Pixar released another "original" movie that could relate to all audiences. One thing Pixar has always done right, is making their movies for families. Kids could love a Pixar project a lot, parents can enjoy them too, whether it's because their children are addicted to it or if they love it themselves.
While I wouldn't say A Bug's Life is necassarily the prime example of that, I still think the movie succeeds at entertaining all audiences, or entertaining in general.
Why I say "original" instead of just original is because the movie is familiar. It's a simple film, about a bug wanting to be liked. Every decision, plotline and character is something we've seen before, but this time in a different way.
Now, does it live up to previous installement in Pixar's filmography? No. Not even close. I'm not the biggest fan of Toy Story, but I can acknowledge the function of the film and how fresh, new, EXCITING it was back then. I didn't exist untill the 2000's, so I may not have the nostalgia many have, but I still really enjoy the movie, even for its simpleness. But even though A Bug's Life is also simple, it's less exciting to watch and less likeable characters also.
Most of the adventure presented here isn't something I wanted to go back to really fast. Now I did for this Pixar rewatch, and while it wasn't as bad as I thought, there is no way I'll ever turn back to this one. Especially when you have movies like Coco or Toy Story 3 available too.
So overall, this isn't bad film. With the many problems I still have, A Bug's Life entertains and is a fun watch. It's not original nor is it highly exciting, but I'd still recommend it to people who haven't seen it. It's a Pixar flick after all. You have to watch them at some point in your life I guess.... Done with the yapping, thanks for reading!!
