I feel like I'm somehow in the wrong given the reputation, but it really didn't do an awful lot for me. I don't hate the magical and fantastical elements of the story, but I just struggle to make sense of the selective way it works, and the way sometimes it's implied they are there whereas others it's implied they aren't really there. Like the tree they plant doesn't really grow (though I did find the mushroom cloud shape an interesting choice and wondered if there was more to that); but then I can explain how she found the younger sister and got to the hospital without the cat bus. At one point I wondered if the toad was significant, like did they accidentally lick a hallucinogenic toad? But I feel like there's only the bus stop scene where that would make sense. I figured then that there has to be some metaphor in there somewhere but I'm drawing a bit of a blank on what it actually is. I dunno, perhaps I'm overthinking it, and should just go with this lovely children's fantasy piece. It's by no means a bad film, but I just felt like I couldn't quite crack the nut so to speak. Like I didn't seem to get from it what most others did. Still glad to have finally seen it though.
