Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?
The Witch started off as good. I enjoyed the atmosphere, I dug the faithfulness to olden time dialogue, the production design and costumes were great. I liked it, but there was perhaps a noticeable roadblock keeping me from truly getting into it. Then, about a third or so into it? It got better. It got very good. It managed to creep me the fuck out, got me feeling genuine terror and dread, and eventually actual attachment to the family. This is a very grim flick. A portrayal of humans as inherently sinful creatures, far more susceptible to evil than good. Akin to The Shining, we get to see a family break apart; go insane together. Just when you think their situation cannot get worse, it just continues to do so. No time for remorse. Only more time for anguish.
The performances across the board are fantastic. Even the kids are notably good, if not the best actors on display. The cinematography and editing is top-notch. The score is haunting, adding to the already gloomy atmosphere. I find it particularly intriguing that the moment that disturbed me the most, above the violence or the shrieking or the haunting imagery, is when a certain someone speaks for the first time at the very end. Their voice shook me, which I'm sure was part of the intention. This is the voice of pure evil. It's darkly enchanting, making the hair on your neck stand up. You know who this is. I won't mention them by name. I'll just say they're adorable until they're not. Makes enough sense. Evil has to be attractive at first. It lures you in with desires before rearing its true, ugly head when it's too late to turn back.
God is how He was in the past. A contradiction. He is to be feared, yet His love is infinite. He will damn you to a fiery eternity unless you give Him all of your heart and soul. You are not birthed from the love of God. You are birthed from the hatred of Satan. A depraved world to live in, but it is the world of The Witch. I really enjoyed this. Will likely be watching it again in my film class next week if I think I can stomach seeing it with an audience and substantially louder sound. It would be on Halloween, so a better time than any to watch it. Regardless, mildly shaken by The Witch. This is the horror shit I like to see. More like this, thank you very much.
