Hellraiser

Hellraiser

31 Days of Horror | 2020 (1/31)

I've decided to join in on some of the October horror fun with my own little "challenge" to watch 31 horror movies in 31 days.. pretty simple concept. I picked a lot of movies I haven't seen, though there will be a couple rewatches, one being a special film for 500 total films logged when the time comes. I love horror movies, so naturally I'm pumped to do this!

I started the month off with a real banger. I've known Hellraiser existed for a long time now, but for whatever reason I never got around to it until today, the October vibes getting the best of me. I've seen the iconic quoted scene about "tearing someone's soul apart" a few times, but in context, it was finally an awesome thing to see. This movie was freaky and weird -- two things that I love to see in a horror movie of this caliber, I mean seriously, who actually thinks of a premise like this? It shouldn't work, but directorially, Barker really executes on this.

There is an attractive, ugly aura that hangs over this film. Almost everything in here is shrouded by mystique. We never really get to know the villains, which could be seen as a downfall by some, but I think it worked wonders for what the film is going for. This film rides the coattails of the classic "Pandora's Box" story in a unique way. The acting is great, thankfully. Performances in horror movies are known to be hit or miss in some cases, especially in a cult-type film like Hellraiser, but the actors delivered.

I already really like the film, but this is one of those movies that will probably grow on me over time. I don't really know what to think about the very ending yet, but I'm sure I'll come up with an opinion about it eventually. All in all, this is like quintessential horror, so if you're a fan of watching weird shit, then give this a go. I highly recommend it.
