I've always found Shane Black's thematic excursions into the golden age of porn, fatherhood, and the dissolution of trust in our political institutions ("You expect an angel and you get Nixon") well-meaning yet sloppy, but I don't really care when he's one of the few people in Hollywood right now who can write dialogue that is nothing but jokes w/o getting exhausting, as well as writing precocious teenagers into our hard-R action buddy comedies that we rarely get anymore and they actually add to the enjoyment instead of weighing it down. I also used to feel a little ashamed that I didn't support this in theaters when I did have a passing interest, but I was lucky enough to eventually catch a screening w/ a big crowd 5 months after it came out on retail. We had such a good time that I could still hear them guffawing in my head at everything Literally Me does in this movie as I was revisiting on Netflix alone in my own house just to take a brief mental vacation from a long intense slow TV season I'm in the middle of right now. Even if most of the cutting between shots and scenes feels a little truncated-for-TV, the shootouts occasionally fall into the trap of watching professional killers miss each other in the middle of bigger setpieces, and the wider conspiracy at the heart of the plot is a bit of a wash, there is still so much more potential between Maximus and Literally Me's chemistry that our lack of a sequel 6 years later should have killed a Time Warner executive's career by now.
