Sicko

Sicko

'Sicko', a perfectly built case.

Recently my mother has been on a harmful anti-covid vaccine streak using her best friend's neighbours uncle's bad reaction to the Pfizer vaccine as evidence to support her case; she uses personal anecdotes and blatantly untrue "studies" as evidence/the truth and as reason to take an public anti-vax stance. I mention this because I'm not one to believe anecdotes like the ones we've all heard so much, yet so little of, of recent from anyone. But Noah, so much of Michael Moore's supposed "evidence" is showing average people's personal experiences, personal anecdotes. Why then do I believe Moore built an objectively faultless case here?

He presents hundreds of these stories! From all walks of life too, which, obviously, is an absolute necessity when building a file of information and statistics.

He pairs these stories with hard evidence (Preserved conversations, legal documents, personalised letters & phone calls.) which of course, is proof more than anyone's word. This evidence doesn't make the very normal people featured redundant though, it's there to build on their experience, and they're in the movie for the sake of movie making. Moore has real humans incorporated into his schemes, hilarious as they are sad, in ways so unique, hilarious, essential, and informative you wouldn't believe.

Moore doesn't always present all sides in his films, but in the case of 'Sicko' there's no stone left unturned. Yes, to what extent each side is examined isn't particularly close, but it's certainly enough to show the true complexities faced on both sides of the coin, literally.

When documentary filmmaking Michael Moore is almost unrivaled. You can tell he always has a plan, but he leaves room to adapt at every turn. If he discovers a shocking story of poor hospital patients dumped in nothing more than a thin hospital gown on the side of a busy Los Angeles street... by golly he'll take it! And he'll fucking use it.

It's with near genius presentation, thorough understanding + examination, and an ability to mould for a situation or people that Michael Moore is able to create something so unbelievably important for everyone, specifically the USA though, factual, cheekily comedic, and fantastically engaging. The perfect case.
