When I first saw the trailer for The Wild Robot, I immediately dismissed it as "pro-Ai propaganda". It's no secret massive corporations have been integrating Ai technology into their films, with some suggesting an intentional push for positive associations with the technology being embedded into the text and subtext of films published by certain content platforms as a way of priming audiences for the future.
What I didn't expect was a neuro-affirming allegory for innate differences in communication being told through an affectionate bond between unlikely pairings.
I think I cried six times while watching this in the cinema and was so engrossed that even the non-stop noise of children running up and down the aisles could not detract from the film.
For a family film, this landed on many fronts both psychologically and emotionally. There is a core adventure that's colourful and clear enough to theoretically hold the attention of younger viewers (except for in our cinema I guess) and enough to engage adults so long as they're open to the emotional experience on offer. And like Wall-e before it, The Wild Robot makes its stance on climate and the corporation's who destroy it for everyone else pretty clear in certain scenes. It's both cynical and optimistic that life can overcome the obstacles in its path.
And hey, maybe if the emotional shit didn't connect with you, at least you can come out on the other side more clearly understanding you might need therapy 😊
