"Don't waste it... don't waste your life, Stark."
So I'm planning on doing a marathon of the MCU again before Captain Marvel/Avengers Endgame but the difference this time is that, because I've seen these films multiple times now (except Ant-Man And The Wasp) I plan on watching them with a more critical eye instead of my fanboy goggles that I usually do.
Imagine my surprise when, after thinking I'll be lowering all my scores as I know some of my scores are too high, that I actually increase the score of the very first film of the marathon. The thing is, this is a great film. Not just a great superhero movie, but a great movie in general. The acting is on point, the visuals are great, the direction is solid and the writing is fantastic. Maybe the third act was a little rushed but it was definitely still enjoyable. The chemistry between RDJ and both Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow is great. It genuinely feels like these guys all have a history and have been working together before the film happened rather than them just being actors.
The crazy thing is when this film launched, Iron Man was only known by comic book nerds. He wasn't Spider-Man or The Hulk or the X-Men. He was essentially a nobody to 95% of the audience. So the confidence that both RDJ and Jon Favreau showed with this, RDJ with his typical quirky, sharp wit and Favreau for allowing RDJ to go full-RDJ, is crazy to think about.
Some people can't stand the MCU, and while I can understand due to the effect it has had on certain elements of film-making (everyone trying to start a universe etc.) I think films are all the better for the MCU happening and it all started here.
