For 128 minutes I could not stop staring at my laptop screen as I witnesssed this absolute masterpiece.
La La Land is masterful from beginning to end. It appeals to the eye with its gorgeous visuals, displaying almost every single color in the spectrum in the most gracious and simplistic yet beautiful way.
The soundtrack and music are very important in a film like this, and every single song delivered. My ears are so thankful for all the piano notes, the vocals, the melodies, lyricism, and all. that. jazz. This soundtrack is most definitely one of the best things I have ever listened to musically, and when synchronized with their corresponding scenes in the film and the actors' emotions and thoughts, it sounds even better.
The acting in La La Land is great and the characters are completely embodied and developed throughout. We get to see who Mia and Sebastian are, what their lifelong dreams are and how they plan and still have hope to complete them despite obstacles and a bit of bad luck playing into their lives. Meeting each other was what they needed, for they gave each other the support necessary to keep going and were able to see the passion that each other had for their own dreams and let it positively affect their own lives. Mia even changes her mind about jazz after meeting Sebastian, saying that he made her love it just because of how passionate about it he felt.
La La Land discusses a message that is often not seen in romance. Sometimes, love and life dreams or goals simply do not belong together. It's a sorrowful thing that people have to go through: not getting to be with the person they love and fully accomplish their purest dreams simultaneously. And it's even sadder when, as we see in La La Land, there is a rencounter and we get to see how much that person has achieved without us, not necessarily because we were standing in their way but because they simply could not do both things. Humans are ambitious and hopeful creatures, and, as sad as it is, the reality is that we will probably not achieve everything we hope to have in life, and some things will have to be sacrificed along the way in order to reach happiness.
To summarize, before I start rambling (if I haven't already), La La Land is a delightful story about dreams and love and how they intertwine and affect each other, displayed beautifully through the magic of music and the gorgeous visuals and cinematography that this crew successfully achieved. This definitely takes the cake as one of my favorite films of all time.
