I need a version of this movie where instead of a lighthouse, it’s two guys manning one of the more remote beacons of Gondor in the Lord of the Rings.
I absolutely love this film and find it strangely comforting. Yes, it’s about two men (one man?) losing his fucking shit but damn if the fisherman sweaters, constant pipe smoking and Kodak double-X 35mm black & white film stock in 1.91.1 aspect ratio don’t make it look incredibly appealing. I feel like Ephraim Winslow while sitting in my windowless cubicle looking at excel every day as it is. If I’m going to go insane, I’d prefer to at least do it in a remote lighthouse with Willem Dafoe.
I’ve also been listening to a lot of Robert Eggers interviews in the lead up to Nosferatu and he often talks about how he’s obviously proud of the Witch but that The Lighthouse was the first time he managed to fully translate what he had in his head onto the screen. Which really does come across when you watch it because every aspect of it is so specific, detailed and considered. This is a movie that I’ll keep coming back to because I feel like I latch on to a different shot or moment every time I watch it. Also because Pattinson’s delivery of, “if I had a steak, I’d fuck it” gets better every time.
